PostSubject: MultiCam Vs. ACU   Sun 15 Apr 2007, 1:14 pm

Now that I have a set of ACU next to a set of MultiCam, I am duly impressed with both. Besides what the actual camo print is, both of these sets are superior craftmanship and design to any camo I have used or seen before (sans Frags MC and Gunmans ACU). One seriously has to try a set of these on to truely appreciate their superior design and function.

Verdict? ACU 9 points, MC 6 points. Mind you, this is issue versus replica so in truth, I have a feeling that Cyre MC would pwn the ACU.

So, even with the repo vs. issue, I declare a TIE!

Both are amazing BDU's with innovation after innovation. If I was to get more BDU of one type, it would probably be ACU due to being able to get ISSUE gear for dirt cheap. (For example on ebay, 4 sets for $12).

Now, people are going to whine about the actually camo print and that is not what this review is about, it is about the superior design and manufacture. Also, movement is half the battle with camo and as seen in the many photo examples, both camo's hold up in PG.

Field trials will best finish my opinion but wearing them out in the blowing wind up north, both are very weather resistant.

Barely... When wearing, they are near vertical to the arm. But yeah, I guess some slant is still slant. MC has very heavily slanted pockets that are much easier to reach into. Not that I can see accessing my arm pockets much though...

PostSubject: Re: MultiCam Vs. ACU   Sat 21 Apr 2007, 6:36 pm

Waouhhh ! just received mine this morning, and wearing it !! Love it !

So having MC and ACU now, I can compare.

My vote goes to ACU : more confortable, better design. I think it's due to the ACU being Issued, and the MC being a cheap repro. Probably the real MC is way better than the one I have.

Concerning the camo, MC is still my favorite jst because I didn't test ACU, but it doesn't look at all like on picture : it's a greyish green with tan, so it should work good. Another good thing is : it's neutral, it doesn't "catch" your eye at all. They are right when they say "Universal Camo", it's not magic like CADPAT in spring around here, but should work all the time, anywhere !
And the design is just incomparable with other bdu.

And $40 for 2 sets (the real deal, with IR patches etc...) in mint condition....can't beat that

I agree, like I said in my review, it is a shame that none of us are using Crye MultiCam for a proper comparison. Like you and I said, if you are looking at new camo, get ACU, you can not beat the price!!!!

I paid $75 for my set Sad

Frag gets his off ebay for next to nothing...

If anyone is interested in getting some ACU, I am interested in organizaing some sort of order to get a bulk batch, at some point, and divide it up for best fitting.

As I said, I can organize a bulk order with the guy who sold my sets. But prices can vary : small sizes are usually cheap ($9-$11) but large and extra large are more around $30.
And it's ebay so it's bidding, so you never know...
But I guess if I can collect the money with your size, I can deal with the guy without going through ebay.

So that puts us at 3 with myself added. I will pay $40-50 a set, leaving some extra in case and something to cover the ebay time, Frag.

If you can get a bunch of sets in at the $40 dollar total range each, I guarantee that they will all be sold. Even at $40, you can not get a better deal on modern pattern.

I will need to resize off of what I have, it is just a smidgeon too short.

Ha ha ha ha, as stated in this review, I was dicussing build, not pattern.

me wrote:

It would be interesting to fool around with the ACU and try to adapt it for the area, maybe a nicer Coyote Brown color. Still, if you are playing in sandy or high grass areas, then ACU is great, it is also adapted towards urban combat.

Me, I like MultiCam. It is a shame that Crye Multicam is so expensive, ergo, why ACU is attractive due to the price. Still, if anyone is interested in doing a group order for some Crye MC, let me know. It will not be for awhile (funds pending) but it would be nice to see if we can get a deal if we order 5 sets or so.

As for those of you who die by digital, MC does have digital elements, mainly gradient transitional phasing. Though it is not a bunch of pixels, you can see how effective the transitioning is:

The best news is that they have R6 (version 6) out now with a series of improvements. So be carefull when purchasing, make sure that you are getting the newest materials.

Also, for you gear nuts out there, there is also the shirt for summer under armor wear.

Albeit that the ACU did stand out in that area there is a use for it in one of our playing feilds in the spring just after the snow comes off and before the foliage is grown in. And since it is where we start our season (snow off in this location first) i would still like to get me a set. That and the fact that i want one of everything. LOL

Agreed, can't go wrong having a little bit of everything, especially if you can get the ISSUE version for cheap.

I would like to continue the test for Patterns over the year.

This last game, ACU did not fair well on the main field. MC from what I saw what decent, the dark OD and greens showed up well against the horizon but were amazing in the bush.

Anyone have some commentary from the last game on what worked and what didn't?

As stated before, I prefer the multicam. The ACU seemed a bit better in the brush when there was snow on the ground, but once we got up into the pines it really stuck out, especially when the sun came out.

Let me know when you get that second set of multicam in Doug and I can EMT you.

Good luck getting real Crye gear. Crye won't sell outside of the US, so unless you know someone south of the border or buy used (if you can find it) or want to get raped on ebay, you're stuck with either knockoff stuff or lowend Truspec BDU's or high end Dropzone gear. Those of us who got the Crye gear got it on the initial preorder or know people in the US.

Agreed, mind you that is just personal taste. I really think that when there is a group of people in similar camo, as with MIA, it really does look good. 10 guys in ACU, despite it being crap in PG cept maybe for winter, still looks great.

As I look at the last milsim photo, I am very impressed with the complete kits and organized look of the clubs. Hopefully though, people will get more than one kit so that they can play many different roles in up-coming Sims.

I would highly recommend getting one digital kit and one standard pattern kit.

Digital kits are modern patterns that have been created through a series of algorithms. This means that they do not have to be pixelated, as seen with MC and Daniel Peterson's Patterns, the mixture of gradients and optic calculations provide optimal camo for a certain engagement distance. That being said, digital disruptive camo, ie the stuff that is pixelated provides the optimal camo at shorter ranges, ie what Airsoft is being played at.

Soooo, recommended digital:

ACU - Cheap! Get issue gear that is tough as nails for next to nothing, BUT, it really does not work that well in Spring, summer, and fall seasons. Still, good alternative to whites in the winter. That and the actual material and cut is designed very well, just the coloring... urgh...

MARPAT - Works very well in PG, can get decent prices on repo gear. Cut is good but expect to pay lots for anything of quality (compared to ACU at $30). Works well in the bush, against green of brown, recommended for most seasons of PG! Still looks like arse in my opinion though.

CADPAT - Be one of the homeboys! Yay Canada for being the first! Works very well when PG is green! In the winter... well... big green target in the snow, still holds its own in the bush though! On the pricey side though.

MultiCam - Works decently in PG 'cept it does stand out against green backdrops. Great universal camo though, but, you will pay through the teeth for any non-repo gear. Still, tons of repo stuff available due to surge of popularity.

Digital Tiger - Dunno, haven't seen any in use yet but if it works like the normal TS, then it should be fine, BUT, there is not readily available issue gear in DTS. Still, should be interesting to see.

lots of other variations are around but these are available and do have other non-bdu gear available.

As for non-digital gear. I would recommend Woodlands or Tigerstripe for their presence in the the club. Mind woodlands does have the most available accessories.

Me, since this is in the MC thread, I am still really sold on Multicam and so is much of the Airsoft Community. So much gear is now available in MC it is catching up to woodlands. Still, if you are getting gear, a plain color does match multiple sets of BDU, OD or CB is the way to go.

-Doug

I am totally sold on the Marpat now that you can get it with most of the features of the ACU cut. Can't wait to give this stuff a try. Price is high ($60 a piece) but a good pair of jeans costs the same. From the milsims the marpat has really held it's own.
